Joan of Arc

1999  Alliance Atlantis
Length 144 minutes
Not Rated

During the early 15th century, England, in alliance with Burgundy, controlled much of what is modern France. The French were losing a war that had lasted decades, the famous 100 Years War. In 1428 the young Joan of Arc received visions which asked her to find the true king of France and help him reclaim his throne. The visions continued as she resisted for more than three years, but finally went to Charles VII in Chinon and told him of her messages from heaven. Carrying a banner that proclaimed the glory of Christ and the Blessed Mother, she led troops from one battle to another. Her determination and bravery encouraged the army to victories from 1429 to 1430 which brought Charles VII to the throne. Captured by the Burgundians during the defence of Compiegne, she was sold to the English for 10 thousand francs. She was put on trial by an ecclesiastical court conducted by Cauchon, Bishop of Beauvais, a supporter of England, and was subsquently excuted as a heretic at the age of 19. Later in 1456 her case was re-tried, and Joan was acquitted, but of course this was over two decades too late. Over four hundred years later she was cannonized by Pope Benedict XV in 1920.

This excellent movie recreats Saint Joan of Arc's amazing and triumphant life in dramatic fashion. A compelling incredible true story that changed the face of Western Europe.
