The Eternal City:
A Profile of Rome, Byzantium, the Papacy and the suffering Church

1994 Westernhanger/LBC Productions
112 minutes in length
Not Rated

Rome's ancient origins led eventually to the formation of a republic, and then an empire. During the early years of Christianity this famous city owned the dark status as the persecution center for thousands of members from this new religion. All changed when Constantine became emperor and began the process whereby Christianity would become the state religion of the empire. This political and cultural change laid the groundwork for the name the “eternal city” or “city of the Popes”. Throughout the next eighteen centuries many different nations rose and fell on the European continent. Italy, and therefore Rome, also experienced a series of political upheavals and transformations. Throughout this Rome has remained the “eternal city” and Vatican City (inside Rome) is the center of the Catholic Faith. This video is an interesting historic documentary on both Rome and the much younger Vatican City.
