Based on Mary Jane Ward's best-selling novel, this ground breaking film was nominated for six Academy Awards. Olivia de Havilland makes a stunning performance about a woman who has a mental breakdown and is placed in the worst of care centers. She is put through a series of brutal and archaic treatments, including being forced into close quarters with patients whose disorders far exceed her own.  This method is used as an attempt to shock her back to reality and sanity.  An excellant movie which reveals suffering at a level that most of us do not understand and unfortunately also receives only limited compassion.
